AppZen is an AI FinTech Platform used for fraud detection. It started as a Travel & Expense fraud detection product, and into an Account Payable Invoice and Contract Audit (AP Audit) and AI Platform. Using computer vision, deep learning, and semantic analysis, AppZen became an AI platform for modern-day finance teams.

Within the space of less than two years, I have helped transform AppZen into a tool easily used to help businesses. These are just a few of the areas that have had my attention over the journey, and a preview of what I have accomplished.

My Role

I joined the AppZen team in 2018, where I was the first and only product designer. My role was to scale and enhance the product experience and interface with the limited resources available. The program needed a major overhaul on user experience, usability, and scalability. I also help to apply my design process to improve the product develop process.

AppZen started with just one product, Expense Audit. AppZen had spent most of their resources focused on the AI technology that makes their platform a futuristic finance tool, but it was left with an old early 20th-century interface. The company was eager to grow and expand to multiple products, but needed to get the usability right first. The redesign was a success that it reduced 70% of the complaints from red accounts.

Before After

AppZen started with just one product, Expense Audit. This program saves companies millions of dollars each quarter simply and effectively. As it was such a success, we officially introduced AP Audit in the summer of 2019.  Our Star Match technology is the star of the show, highlighting any discrepancies to the users as well as many other beneficial features.

From this product, we learned that users are more willing to invest in seamless automation products rather than compliance products. Within a couple of months, we released another product, Touchless AP, which finally completed our whole Account Payable product.

The AppZen Journey

The journey with AppZen has been remarkable, enjoying the challenges of designing to scale in such a fast fashion. Growing from 80 employees to over 250 employees, in addition to seeing AppZen receive Series B and C funding all within one year, it has been incredible to be a part of the evolution.

AppZen is automating something that a human is doing, but doing so to an extent that no human ever could. The amount of savings that we’re generating from AppZen because of replacing manual work is a wash. The value-generating opportunity is that before, our T&E auditors weren’t looking at all of the things like hotel and airline upgrades, fuel fill-ups, Wi-Fi charges when we have a global hotel agreement, etc. That’s where we’re creating lots of awareness...where we’re making decisions that are outside of policy or where we already have global agreements and are being wasteful.

A lot of people feared that AppZen would replace people. It’s doesn’t! It redirects their time to more value-added activities. So, instead of spinning our wheels finding errors - or maybe not - we’re actually adding more value, and even increasing the number of reports we’re reviewing.
